With support from an Illinois Humanities grant, Joseph Dole—a committed advocate, writer, and artist—has collaborated with 14 incarcerated artists to create “Art & Sarcasm Against Mass Incarceration.” This unique collection of artwork illuminates the realities of incarceration using popular graphics, metaphor, and humor. The artists examine the economics of incarceration, the impact of changing laws, toxic prison conditions, and the toll of incarceration on families.
While these works convey the deep pain and harm inflicted by incarceration, they are also acts of resilience and resistance—bringing vital issues to public attention from within prison walls. Together, these artworks call for awareness, conversation, and change.
